3BM were pleased to attend the launch of the National Autism Project at the House of Lords, on Tuesday 28th April 2015, hosted by the Baroness Neuberger, DBE. The National Project supported by The Shirley Foundation is being set up to provide recommendations on autism research and practice in the UK and to raise awareness on directed investment and the benefits and to both those with autism and reduce the impact on the on the economy.
3BM attended the launch with the Headteacher of Queensmill School, Jude Ragan, OBE. The newly located Queensmill School was designed and project managed by 3BM, reflecting on the needs of the children, learners and professionals. Ofsted made comment that “The accommodation is outstanding. The new school décor, for example, minimises unwanted distractions of noise and colour and this contributes very well to the relaxed environment in which pupils learn.”

“The launch of this important project was attended by the members of the Pan London Autism Schools’ Network (PLASN) all of whom are Headteachers of schools that, like Queensmill, cater entirely for children with severe and complex autism. As a group, PLASN represents close to 1000 families in and around London who have children who are severely affected by this condition. We are all becoming increasingly aware of the place that a Low Arousal Environment has for these children. This provides the child with the vital calm that they need in order to be able to manage the stresses of their condition.
3BM staff, the architect Nick Rogers and the Director Andy Rennison, have learned all that we know about autism and the effect that a purpose designed building can have upon the mental health of these emotionally very fragile children and young people. Nick has designed the new Queensmill School build to encompass our Low Arousal approach, and we are already quite convinced of the calming effect it is having on our pupils. In order to gather further evidence of this, Dr. Catherine Carroll, lecturer at the London Institute for Education, is carrying out a research project to quantify this effect.
We at Queensmill are therefore quite sure that this knowledge, understanding and approach from 3BM can have a wider effect than at Queensmill through continued collaborative working with both PLASN and with NAP.” said Jude Ragan, OBE – Head Teacher at Queensmill School
